In NY State can you get funding if you choose to home school your kid?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

My daughter is in sixth grade and she is doing terrible. It seems that the teachers in her school either do not care or do not know how to teach. They send home homework that has not even been gone over. We are left trying to figure it all out. I have been giving home schooling alot of thought and I don't know if we can afford for me to stay home and do this. Also, in NY State do you have to pay school taxes if your child is being home schooled? Does anyone have any answers?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

I am righting a story, and I don't know where they would go to school. Like, does the foster home have its own teachings, like home schooling? Or do they go to their city's school district?
Foster homes, as in like an adoption center. Where kids wait for people to take thm into their care..

home school?

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

i feel trapped in the school system and want to get a real education so that i can prepare myself for going out on my own, but my parents aren't into the home-schooling idea since they don't want to "teach" me or have me teach myself. since they don't like the school system very much either, they said they'd be open to the idea of taking me out of school, but only if i found an alternative that they could work with. so here i am. are there any other alternative schooling programs that i can do?

Why do so many parents that home school trash schooled kids?

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I don't get it, why it is that so many parents that home school their kid’s trash school kids.

I'm 14 and I've been home schooled all my life and I hear a lot of home school parents trash schooled kids just because they go to school. They make it sound like that just because they go to school their automatically going to use drugs, drink alcohol, smoke, have sex, curse, cut themselves, use anorexia or bulimia, shoplift, etc...
Now I know of home schoolers who have lost their virginity, cut themselves, curse, shoplifted, and used anorexia and bulimia. (I'm not saying that all home schoolers do that, and not all school kids do that either)

Me I have used bulimia and still using it, I'm treated different because I'm home schooled, I don't know multiplication (I'm suppose to be in 8th grade) And I don't have that many friends. What makes home schooling so great and why do home school parents trash schooled kids?

How come many home school families become so defensive when answering questions from home school detractors?

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Home school families only please.

Many times I read answers that sound pretty defensive instead of just factual, and "real".
I came on this forum with the intention of exchanging information, discuss home schooling issues, and maybe help answer some questions for a family who is just starting their home school journey.
Is it so hard to admit that at times home schooling is difficult, exhausting, and that on occasion we doubt ourselves too?
Trust me we would not have it any other way, and neither would our children; so please explain to me; without getting defensive, why some of the questions/statements push the "let me tell you" button, knowing full well know that that is their goal?.
Yes, unfortunately I too have fallen into that trap myself several times.
So does it really matter what others believe, and if so why?
My family is very passionate about home schooling, we believe in our way of life, and the God given directive to educate our children.

We see the positive effects of home schooling not only in our own children, but also in many other home school families in our area.

I have at times answered questions more defensively than I would have liked as well, that is why I do understand the reactions to some of the questions.

The point I am trying to make is that we can combat ignorance, and educate other families on the benefits, as well as give factual answers about home schooling without lowering ourselves to the level of the home school detractors who are, as some pointed out are just all to happy to keep up their rhetoric.

However by making some of the answers sound like counter attacks, or using less than flattering language we are not always helping to improve the situation.

Thanks for taken the time to answer so many questions to help people, I think it's awesome.
